Koprinka Reservoir: The Perfect Place for a Walk, Photography, and Active Recreation
Our journey began in Stara Zagora, with our first stop in Kazanlak, where we decided to visit Tyulbeto Park. We took a walk through the park’s beautiful greenery, enjoyed the panoramic view of the city, and explored the monument dedicated to Thracian culture. After a short break, we continued to the town of Shipka, where we felt the spirit of history before heading to our final destination for the day—Koprinka Reservoir. Although we traveled by car, next time we plan to take the same route by bicycle to fully immerse ourselves in nature.
The History of Koprinka Reservoir and the Submerged Village
Koprinka Reservoir is one of the favorite places for the residents of Kazanlak and Stara Zagora, and not only them! Nestled in the beautiful Tundzha River valley, this reservoir offers not only panoramic views and unique nature but also great opportunities for active recreation. Whether you are a nature enthusiast, a photography lover, or simply looking for a place to relax, you will find everything you need here.
The reservoir was created in 1954 as part of a regional water supply and irrigation system. However, its location has deep historical roots—beneath its waters lies the old village of Koprinka, which was submerged during the construction of the dam. Today, there are few visible remains of the village, but it is believed that the area was once home to a significant population for centuries. Legends and stories about the old village are still shared by locals who remember the time before the reservoir.
How to Get to the Reservoir
Koprinka Reservoir is just a short distance from Kazanlak and Stara Zagora, making it easily accessible for both locals and tourists. The road to the reservoir is paved and easy to reach by car. If you prefer a more active approach, you can hike or cycle to the destination.
For cyclists, there are numerous trails and routes that wind around the reservoir and through the nearby forests. The terrain offers exciting challenges for both beginners and experienced riders. Follow the paths along the water and over the hills to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the reservoir and surrounding woods.
Scenic Photography Spots and Natural Attractions
If you are a photographer, Koprinka Reservoir will not disappoint. Early mornings offer stunning reflections on the still water, while the surrounding forests and hills create ideal conditions for capturing natural landscapes. One of the most popular photography subjects is the dam wall, which rises impressively and provides incredible views.
In autumn, when the forests turn golden and red, the area becomes even more picturesque, making it a true paradise for photography enthusiasts. If you want to capture nature at its finest, this is the place to be!
Our Personal Story: When Squirrels Decided to Inspect Our Gear
Last summer, my friends and I went for a walk along a trail around Koprinka Reservoir. We spent time on the opposite shore, where the forest is even greener and calmer. The sun had just broken through the clouds, filtering through the branches and leaves, painting golden lines on the grass. We decided to rest, sat on the cool green grass, and immersed ourselves in the serenity of nature.
Just as we settled down and started to relax, we left our cameras on a nearby tree. Its branches were low, leaving our gear just a few meters from us. Then, completely unexpectedly, small squirrels climbed the tree and began thoroughly inspecting our cameras! It was quite a funny sight—they weren’t afraid of our presence at all. Not only did they examine the cameras closely, but they even “tested” them with their tiny paws. By the time we realized we should retrieve our equipment, the squirrels had already completed their inspection and calmly moved away.
This was one of those small but amusing moments that make hikes around the reservoir even more unforgettable. Nature here is not only beautiful but also full of character—always offering surprises, even from tiny squirrels!
Fishing and Fish Restaurants
Koprinka Reservoir is not only a great spot for walks and photography but also for fishing. Its waters are home to various fish species, including catfish, trout, and carp, making it a popular destination for anglers. Spending the day fishing while enjoying the tranquility of nature is one of the reservoir’s main attractions.
If you wish to enjoy a delicious meal after fishing or hiking, there are several fish restaurants near the dam wall offering fresh fish dishes and local specialties. The area is known for its hospitality and cozy atmosphere.
Camping and Active Recreation
If you prefer to spend the night outdoors, Koprinka Reservoir offers numerous camping spots where you can enjoy a night under the stars. The place is perfect for nature lovers who seek a more authentic connection with the environment. On the other hand, if you want to cycle, relax on the beach, or simply unwind by the water, you will find peace and a chance to escape the fast-paced daily routine here.
